BARE, INC. stages an ad-like dream where cucumbers and water become ritual, culminating as a man drinks until the glass is empty.
The title translates to: “DRINK MORE WATER, YOUR BODY NEEDS IT, SERIOUSLY PLEASE DRINK IT BUT ALSO DON'T WASTE IT BECAUSE WE ARE ON THE VERGE OF A MAJOR WATER CRISIS.” Conceived as a tone poem, the short began as an exercise in liminality and technical experimentation before taking shape as a very short film.
It assembles ad-like imagery (cucumbers falling into a glass, the motions of water, and a man drinking until the vessel is empty) into a montage that is both seductive and unsettling. The piece disguises an abrasive subliminal warning using the language of pleasure to gesture toward scarcity.
I co-directed this short alongside Patrick White, staging and lighting these montage vignettes. To capture the motion of water with hyper-clarity, I used high-speed cine cameras shooting at 5,000 frames per second, creating imagery both sharp and ethereal.
Additionally, I composed the accompanying score, designed to juxtapose abrasive textures against the film’s soft, ad-like visuals; the full extended score can be heard below. My work shaped the project’s tone, balancing technical experimentation with conceptual intent. Joseph Stafford and Peter Chang supported production.
